What Causes Hair Loss?
Before anyone wants to buy hair loss products, they want to know what causes hair loss. Androgenetic Alopecia. What is Androgenetic Alopecia? Simply, it is male pattern baldness, or in females, female pattern baldness. While the exact cause of hair loss is still a mystery, scientists all over the world have been able to come up with a few different theories of the causes of hair loss. Many treatments have been developed based on this research. Some treatments can be quite extreme, others quite simple. By the age of 35 nearly 35-40% of all men suffer from male pattern baldness. Female hair loss is not as widespread as in males, and is also rarely complete hair loss. Men will typically see their hairline recede; women will notice their hair starting to thin all over their scalp. There are many different causes of hair loss. Some scientists believe that hair loss is mostly governed by genetics. If hair loss runs through you family, you will be at risk for it. Other factors are hormonal imbalances, trauma, and some medications will cause hair loss. Trauma such as childbirth, major surgery or illness, poisoning, and chemotherapy have all been known to result in hair loss. These conditions disrupt the normal hair growth cycle. Typically hair will regrow after these events.
In men, DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is the main inhibitor of hair growth. DHT is the main trigger in male pattern baldness. DHT will affect the genetically susceptible hairs and stop hair growth. The onset of this process can start as early as puberty ends, but will mostly depend on family genetics. Most hair loss treatments designed specifically for men target DHT or attempt to block DHT from forming. The most widely recognized product is Minoxidil, sold under the brand name of Rogaine (referred to in some countries as Regaine).
